Good News for September 18, 2024

Maintaining and using institutions differently

Institutions are essential to Church life, indeed to human life. Within them humans can thrive, and their ideals and relationships can come to fruition. It is no surprise that God has been so insistent on the founding and maintenance of proper institutions in dealing with the human race.

The Church holds the family as the primary human institution. Yet, there are a host of other institutions in between, from parishes to schools, religious orders, charity organizations, businesses and neighborhood associations, which together provide the fabric of a healthy life.

Many Christian institutions have lost much of their original spirit and freshness. Many think that the solution is to be found in leaving institutions behind altogether. “Spirituality” comes to replace “organized religion.”

A Christian institution does not need to move decisively away from Christianity to lose its way. This can apply to a family or a parish or a university or a charity organization. It merely has to shed its Christian bearings and carry on in a “business as usual” mode. In a fairly short space of time, the institution conforms to dominant cultural forces. Its inner spirit becomes lost to Christ. We hear jokes about whether a school, university, charity, religious order, or person in politics or leadership is “really Catholic.” We hear distraught parents wondering why their children not only left - but are adamantly against - the Catholic Church. “We sacrificed for years. We sent them to Catholic Schools. What happened?”

In an apostolic age, the way Christian institutions function will have to be substantially different. In apostolic times, Christian institutions need to become intentional and self-conscious about their mission, their aims, their policies and practices. Those who lead and belong to them need to know what they are doing with greater clarity, and why they are doing it.

They must also be clear that maintaining strong Catholic practice will exact a cost. They will be considered “haters,” bigoted, medieval. Governments will not only threaten to take away tax-exempt status; not adhering to certain regulations can force institutions to close down. The US Supreme Court examined a Philadelphia case (Fulton v. City of Philadelphia) about the city's decision to stop placing children with the local Catholic Social Services because of the Church’s teaching on the family. In Little Sister of the Poor v Azar the Sisters faced ruinous fines if they did not comply with a mandate which would provide contraceptives to employees. The mandate would have forced the Sisters to violate their deeply-held religious beliefs. The case was eventually settled but not until after a multi-million-dollar and 7-year legal fight on behalf of the Sisters.

Given the current climate, the result will be institutions that possess technical excellence, stellar academic reputations, proud histories, distinguished and accomplished alums (maybe even championship sports teams). Yet, they will not be Christian.

Understanding Annulments: How the Tribunal Can Help After Divorce

The Tribunal is available to help people who have experienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. One is the durable bond of marriage. This is God's law. On the

other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding, or ability. The Annulment procedure addresses these circumstances.

Whether you are divorced and want to marry in the Catholic Church or are remarried outside the Church, please visit our website.

Upcoming Special Collections

Black & Native American Missions

Here is a message from Archbishop Nelson Perez:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Thank you for your generous support of the Black and Indian Mission Collection each year. This fundraising initiative was established as the first national collection for the Catholic Church in the United States in 1874. Since that time, it has proven itself to be a successful vehicle for sharing the resources of the Church’s members to provide for the unique cultural, pastoral, and temporal needs of our African American, Native American, and Alaskan Native sisters and brothers. Pope Francis reminds us that all are called to evangelize with the zealous heart of a Missionary Disciple. As we embark on another year of evangelization in the communities benefitting from this endeavor, I invite you to make a difference by offering prayers and a financial contribution to support these missions.

The collection is taken up the weekend of September 7 and September 8, 2024, and the rest of the month.
